Dental bridges literally bridge the gap created by one or more missing teeth. A dental bridge is a fixed, or non-removable, restoration serving as an excellent option to replace missing teeth. Missing or losing teeth happens for many reasons including: periodontal disease, trauma and decay. Regardless of the reason, missing teeth leaves a gap in your smile, which can have an impact on many areas of your life.
A bridge is made up of two or more crowns for the teeth on either side of the missing tooth or teeth supported by anchoring teeth on each end. These anchoring teeth, called abutments.
The missing tooth space is filled by a pontic, or artificial tooth. The abutment and pontic teeth are fabricated together creating one solid unit inserted as such. Dental bridges are durable and will last for many years to come, providing that proper home care instructions are closely followed.
